NIACIN and LDL-P and LP PLA 2

Owen/Jonwen
Some interesting Blood Results: Value your opinions on these Lipid changes over a 4 month period…

Sept 3 2013 NMR; NMR Jan 15, 2014
Total Cholesterol 218 200
HDL 61 86
LDL 149 101
TRIGS 38 56
LDL-P 1624 1130
LP PLA2 97 180

*****Started 1000mg SLO-NIACIN on Sept 11 2013, and increased to 1500mg on Oct 11, 2013****

The Niacin has really reduce my particle number(LPL-P) to respectable 1130, lowered my LDL to 101, raised my HDL to 86…. However the PL-PLA2 cardiac inflammation marker has increased greatly to 180(from 97)(which is still within the “low risk” range)…Your thoughts? Am concerned about the significant increase in LP PLA2…

Am currently on;
5GMS C, Lysine and Proline (Two scoops Cardio C daily)…
1GM Liposomal C..Liveon Labs
4-8 Mg Astaxanthin
100-200 Ubiquinol
Fish Oil..Approx 900Mg EPA/DHA

Quit Lipitor for good in Aug 2013…

On the LP PLA2,
The expected values are measured in ng/mL. Average value for females is 174 ng/mL (range 5th - 95th percentile: 120-342), and the average value for males is 251 (range 5th - 95th percentile: 131-376).
Statins will lower this marker that could explain the 90. Looks like your in the same range as 95% of the people tested Now!
Super good results stay the course and have your doc do a liver check at least once a year some people have problems with it on high dose Niacin. It's not a common problem but worth checking.
Keep an eye on your carb intake also ( everybody cheats on this once in a while, just don't make it a habit!!)

Since I'm off all statins for 6 months. I'm just concerned that my LP PLA2 went from 47(Sept 2013), to 187 now,,,,,The only thing I am doing different for the past 3-4 months, is taking 1500 Mg Slo-Niacin. I had read (The Simivastin/Niacin Study) that Niacin can increase LP PLA 2...Do you consider this an issue/problem?

Are you talking about the AIM HIGH Study that was stopped early because they weren't getting the results they expected??

leshoward wrote:Do you consider this an issue/problem?

No! As I stated before your still within range which is considered normal for 95% of the people tested.
As also said Statins lower this number and that's why big pharma jumps all over using these figures and if they were to say niacin (a Supplement!!!) offers better protection then their billion dollar Cash cow what do you think would happen to their gravey train???
If you studied what LP PLA2 is you'll see it's only a small part of a complex process an it has been a focus by big pharma saying it's the king pin of heart disease Why? because statins have an effect on it but you have to dig real deep to find that so does low dose asprin.
As the tide turns and reality starts coming to light as it's starting to now with the new cholesterol guidelines a lot of these falacies will have to be undone so science can see how the human body really works. Then Vitamin C will be the shining star as the true preventer of heart disease as most of us here at this forum already know.

Have a good day! :)

Some additional concerns/numbers here Johnwen;

In the 4 mos that I’m taking 1500MG Slo-Niacin(in addition to 2 Scoops a day Cardio C since July) my :
SGOT is 42, SGPT 45…These liver markers were in the low 20’s 4 mos ago. And Serum Glucose is 111…..HG A1c is 5.8…Possibly thinking of reducing the Niacin to 1000MG daily..

Your thoughts?

Hi Leshoward
I recommend a book
Niacin:The Real Story

Here they don't recommend slow release Niacin. They say liver function tests may be raised because of methyl depletion, and further on they recommend 2400mg of lecithin.
The book is an easy read and very informative.

Normal Ranges for AST(SGOT)is 0-40 IU/L and ALT (SGPT) is 0-44 IU/L.
So you are just over the top so I would say go ahead and drop it down to 1000Mg.
I'm the voice of experience here I was doing 2000 and my numbers were pretty close to your's
Dropped to a 1000Mg. and been holding SGOT 18 and SGPT 17 with hardly a change in the other numbers.

ON the glucose are you taking any type of BP meds or beta blockers???

And my Primary care doc..a FRIEND OF MINE,,,said keep @ 1500MG Niacin, as my Lipid profile is super..He said those "elevated " liver levels are barely elevated and shouldnt be an issue...Just watch monitor it with continuing blood tests..

Also my Lipoprotein(a) went from 100 nmol/L to 48 on 1500 Mg Niacin..
