Can effient pill be split in half? my husband has been on plavix then switched to effient of over 10yrs...he is currently on 10 mg of effient and want to gradually reduce his doseage to 5mg can the pill be split? He has to have a tooth extraction and he is worried about his bleeding

Yes! Effient aka prasugrel can be split into 2 pieces. The trick here is to take one half one day and the second half the very next day.

This helps many people in the lower hundred pound range take this drug without the hospital visits for body wide hematomas caused by taking the same dose as a two or three hundred pounder gets.

Lilly the manufacture of this drug is well aware of this but refuses to budge on dosing because of the liabilities associated with starting the big people on it and not getting the protection needed.

As far as dropping the dose for a tooth extraction on a 200 pound person doesn’t seem necessary as it’s not a anti coagulation medicine. It just interrupts what’s known as platelet aggregation which is were the platelets stick together and not the coagulation process which are completely different medicines.

As always he should check with the prescribing doctor before altering doses or starting or stopping any medicines.
