Arterial Calcification Reduced with Vitamin K2 Intake According to New Study in the Scientific Journal "Atherosclerosis"

Researchers of the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands examined 564 post-menopausal women regarding whether a daily intake of vitamin K1 and K2 is associated with the degree of coronary calcification.

A higher intake of vitamin K2 was associated with 20% reduction of coronary calcification. The publication is accepted by the journal "Atherosclerosis" and the results are now available online.

Ralph, I think that K2 is one of the important, "newly discovered" supplements.

Hey you guys, I just checked my bottle of SUPER K
from Life Extension. It has K1 @ 9 mg and
K2 @ 1000 mcg -- I think mcg is the same as
microgram, so that would be 200 times higher
than the amount used in the Netherlands test.

Any comment?

Yes. Please be aware that there is more than one form of K2. The form known as menaquinone-7 (MK4) has much longer half-life, and therefore is more effective than the form metatetrenone-4(MK4). A few supplements available have 100 mcg of MK4, and this is what I have been buying. Quite a few have 1000 mcg of MK4. The doseage of MK4 used successfully in Japanese studies was 45 MILLIGRAMS, a dose only found in one product that I found I forgot the name, which was very costly.

The Super K has "Vitamin K2 (as menaquinone-4 and Nutri-K™ menaquinone-7)". I don't like the fact tha they swallow information in this labelling. How much MK7? what is Nutri-K MK7? Maybe there is only one microgram of MK7. I've never liked this sort of thing. Why don't they say straight what's in it?

I would appreciate it if you would verify with the company exactly what is the composition of the K2 in their product and report back to us here. Also ask them what is "Nutri-K". I will be a buyer if their answer is satisfactory.

Excellent info on MK4 is here: http://www.menaq7.com/index.php?s=home

MK-7 is much less expensive and may require only 45 micrograms to be effective for arterial calcification.

Some of the research for MK-4 showed that it was effective in cancer and leukemia, but at high doses of 45 milligrams and more as DOLEV stated.

For Dolev, My earlier post may have violated
protocol -- didn't show up, so I'll keep it
very simple: Amount of the -7 is 20 mcg
out of the 1000 mcg total

Not bad, but I'll probably stay with the 100 mcg MK4.
