Treating atrial fibrillation with a catheter that heats and destroys selected heart tissue is far superior to drug treatments, according to a major international study. The heat treatment, called catheter ablation, has kept 63 percent of atrial fibulation patients in the study free of recurrent symptoms for a year. On the other hand, only 17 percent of those treated with drugs were symptom-free. Results were so dramatic the trial was stopped before it was over.
