Safety of Vitamin C: Urban Legends
http://www.mv.helsinki.fi/home/hemila/safety/I think Hemila actually does quite a good job with vitamin C research. Above is the best analysis of the safety of vitamin C I have ever read. I now believe results of his meta study on common cold and vitamin C are correct, that vitamin C doesn't show beneficial effect in doses and frequency used for majority of people and that it shows substantial effect for exercising people and that prophylaxis might be unjustified. In personal communication, he said that he believes the one can take high gram doses (lot higher then 6g) BUT only in time of disease. I tested this and it looks like I achieve the same benefit with C megadoses that I start only when I feel sick. I don't want to say that higher doses are not needed for other things, i am just talking about common cold. My current opinion is that most would benefit with around 4g/day in 2-3 doses chronically for various other reasons not including common cold.

That is response ? Hardly.... Hemila didn't conduct those studies. He did meta analysis. When studies with higher and more frequent doses are available I am sure he will include them.

Re: Safety of Vitamin C: Urban Legends
Well, the Hickey/Robert rebuttal was to the Cochrane Review (w/Hemila referenced in his paper) and not specifically Hemila's work, but it is all tied together.Quote: The Cochrane review by Douglas et al. [1], which is referenced in the Best Practice article by Douglas and Hemilä [2], covers 60 years of research into vitamin C and the common cold. However, the review omits pharmacokinetic data that invalidate the conclusion that vitamin C is ineffective. This conclusion is not derivable from the data presented.
But the point remains, these "meta" analysis are of small, infrequent dosages, and thus as Hickey/Roberts point out:Quote: Douglas and Hemilä give a misleading impression by not making it clear that the doses they consider are not pharmacological. They claim that the results of one study, giving an 8-g dose at the start of symptoms, are tantalising and deserve further assessment. However, once this single dose has been excreted, the protective effects will be lost. During illness, ascorbate is depleted rapidly and higher oral intakes are tolerated—up to 200 g per day [9]. It would be surprising if this 8-g dose had a large effect. Studies on ascorbate require appropriate doses. Douglas and Hemilä have only confirmed that 60 years of vitamin C research has largely been wasted because of confusion between nutritional and pharmacological intakes, and because of a misunderstanding of the pharmacokinetics
This is in response to your "feeling" the Hemila's analysis was correct. What you said (that most people take these dosages) may be true but is meaningless to the argument of whether vitamin C has value treating the common cold.
You might ask Dr. Hemila why the following protocol works every time its tried: http://www.vitamincfoundation.org/surefire.shtml
