Vitamin C prevents extension of life span in low carb diet

Post Number:#1  Post by dutchboy » Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:24 pm

"Glucose Restriction Extends Caenorhabditis elegans Life Span by Inducing Mitochondrial Respiration and Increasing Oxidative Stress".

This article in 'Cell Metabolism' is about how low carbing can extent lifespan in simple organisms, much like calorie restriction.

What bothers me is that the addition of antioxidants (like C) prevented the life extending effect. The article states that the increased free radicals promote the production of endogenous antioxidants (glutathione?). Since vitamin C reduces the free radicals this effect is prevented. And that seemed to prevent the life extention.

Now I always assumed that free radicals promote aging and that vitamin C can prevent this to some extent. Now I am confused. Anybody any thoughts?

Please post the study.

C recycles glutathione.
